Seventeen open. These five first.

Seventeen bottles are open at the bar every night, one for each jewel. The five below are the ones June pours first, and they change with the day of the week.

The cheese counter

Four feet of cheese, mild to strong.

Eight cheeses, most from within two hundred miles, cut to order by Wren Hartwell. Walk the counter left to right and they get stronger: each one has its six inches.

Seating

Stools for whoever walks in. Booths for whoever plans.

The twelve stools at the zinc bar are never booked: if the door is open, come in. The four booths along the wall hold two to six and can be reserved up to a week ahead.

The room and its name

Why seventeen jewels?

A jewel in a watch is a bearing: a bead of ruby, drilled, that a steel pivot turns in for decades without wearing out. A movement can run on seven. A good one has seventeen, one at every point where metal would otherwise grind on metal. Elias Hartwell stamped the number inside every case he serviced.

  1. +22 / 17

    The center wheel

It turns once an hour and carries the minute hand. One jewel above, one below.

  2. +24 / 17

    The third wheel

It passes the mainspring's push down the line. Two more.

  3. +26 / 17

    The fourth wheel

Once a minute. The seconds hand rides on it.

  4. +28 / 17

    The escape wheel

The wheel that ticks. It lets the power out one tooth at a time.

  5. +210 / 17

    The pallet fork

A small lever that rocks back and forth, on two jewelled pivots.

  6. +212 / 17

    The pallet stones

Two slivers of ruby that catch and release the escape wheel. This is the tick you hear.

  7. +113 / 17

    The impulse jewel

One pin of ruby on the balance that knocks the fork each way.

  8. +417 / 17

    The balance wheel

The heart. Two jewels to hold its staff and two caps to seal them: seventeen.

The walnut regulator clock with its brass pendulum, on the green wall above the watchmaker's scarred oak bench.

The room

Hartwell & Sons mended watches here from 1926 to 2019.

The bench, the regulator clock and the brass shop bell never left the building. In September 2026 the front room reopened as a wine bar, a cheese counter and a bottle shop. Wren Hartwell, the watchmaker's great-granddaughter, runs the counter. June Farrell buys every bottle. The clock still keeps the time.

The whole story of the shop

Social

From the bar, most days.

What came in this week, what got opened, and who is playing records on Thursday.

  • FacebookSeventeen Jewels (example)
  • Wren's hands pulling a wire through a bloomy-rind cheese on a marble slab.

First Frost came in this morning. It will not see Sunday.

  • The zinc bar at night with a glass of red wine, a bottle and two candles.

Eleven seconds of the bar at nine o'clock. Sound off, glass full.

  • Floor-to-ceiling green shelves of bottles with a brass ladder.

June re-shelved by mood instead of region. We are giving it a week.

  • A turntable and a wooden crate of records at the end of the zinc bar, a glass of white wine beside them.

Thursday's crate has arrived. It is mostly organ trios and nobody is complaining.

  • Red wine being poured into a stemmed glass on the zinc bar.

The Regulator. Named for the clock, poured in both rooms on the lane.

  • Hands tying a green ribbon around a kraft gift box.

Seventeen pieces, one ribbon. The Whole Movement takes Wren about two minutes.

The letter

One email, Thursdays.

What June opened this week, the cheese that just came in, and first word on tickets. It takes two minutes to read and there is never a second one.

The family's other rooms

Two more doors, same family.

The Merrows run three rooms. Sable Room is through the second door on this lane, and Turnspit has been roasting chickens on Gristmill Row since 1994. One gift card works in all three rooms.
