Visits and booking
How long is a visit?
Wellness and sick visits are 30 minutes. First visits for new clients are 40. Behavior consults are 60. If you bring two pets, book two slots back to back.
Can I book the same day?
Often, yes. We hold two sick-visit slots every weeknight, at 6:00 and 7:30 pm, and open them to everyone at 3 pm. If the site shows nothing, call: cancellations come in by phone.
What if I am running late?
Under 10 minutes, we still see you. Later than that, we may shorten the visit or move it, and we will tell you which before you come in.
How do I cancel or change a visit?
Reply 2 to the morning text, use the link in the email, or call. No fee 24 hours ahead. Inside 24 hours, no fee the first time; after that, $35.
Cats
Why is there a separate cat entrance?
Cats are calmer when they cannot see, hear, or smell dogs. The side door leads to the cat lobby and the cat ward, which has its own air return. Dogs never go in.
How should I bring my cat?
In a hard carrier with a removable top, covered with a towel in the car. We can examine most cats in the bottom half of the carrier.
My cat panics at the carrier. What can I do?
Start the seven-day carrier training guide a week before. If your cat still panics, ask about pre-visit calming medication, given at home two hours before you leave.
Do indoor cats need vaccines?
Rabies, yes: New York requires it for cats. FVRCP, yes. The feline leukemia vaccine is usually not needed after the kitten series if your cat never goes outside.
Dogs
Can my dog wait in the car?
Yes. Text 'here' to (631) 555-0148 when you park. We text back when the room is ready, and you walk straight in.
My dog is reactive to other dogs.
Book the quiet room. It has its own door to the parking lot, so you never cross the lobby.
Which vaccines does my dog need?
Rabies and distemper-parvo for every dog. Leptospirosis and Lyme for most Long Island dogs, because of ticks and wildlife. Kennel cough and dog flu if your dog boards, goes to daycare, or sees a groomer.
Do you trim nails without an exam?
Yes, as a tech visit: 15 minutes, $28 to $45. If your dog struggles, we stop and plan a different approach rather than hold them down.
Prices and payment
Will I know the cost before you start?
Yes. Every visit on this site has a price range. In the room, you get a written estimate before anything beyond the exam. If the plan changes, we stop and ask.
How do I pay?
Card, cash, or check at the end of the visit. Dental estimates over $600 can be split into three monthly payments.
Do you take pet insurance?
We do not bill insurers directly, but we send itemized invoices and records the same day so you can file a claim.
Is a recheck extra?
No. Rechecks within 14 days of a sick visit are free.
Wellness plans
Is a wellness plan insurance?
No. A plan spreads the cost of prevention over 12 monthly payments and adds a discount. Illness and emergencies are billed as usual.
Can I cancel a plan?
Yes, any time. If you have used more than you have paid, we bill the difference at list price. If not, you owe nothing more.
When is the plan billed?
On the 1st or the 15th, your choice, for 12 months. We email you in month 11, and it renews only if you say so.
Does every pet need its own plan?
Yes, one plan per pet. A second pet in the household gets 10 percent off its plan.
New clients and records
How do I become a client?
Book a 40-minute first visit. We go through your pet’s history in the first ten minutes, so there is nothing to fill in before.
Do you need my pet's old records?
It helps. Email what you have to records@lanternwood.example, or tell us your old clinic and we request them. Transfers are free.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Your pet, a stool sample less than 12 hours old if you can get one, the names of any medications and foods, and the carrier or leash they are calmest in.
Do you see rabbits, birds, or reptiles?
No. Only dogs and cats. It is part of how we keep the building quiet.
After hours and emergencies
What if it is after 9 pm?
Call (631) 555-0163. A licensed veterinary technician answers from 9 pm to 8 am, from 2 pm Saturday, and all day Sunday, and tells you whether to go to a 24-hour emergency hospital tonight or come to us in the morning.
Do you handle emergencies?
During open hours, we see urgent problems the same day and stabilize emergencies before transfer. We have no overnight staff, so overnight care goes to a 24-hour hospital.
What counts as an emergency?
Trouble breathing, collapse, heavy bleeding, a seizure longer than 3 minutes, a dog retching with nothing coming up and a swollen belly, a male cat straining to pee, or anything poisonous eaten. Call first. Do not book online.
Do you do home visits?
For end-of-life care, yes: seven days a week by arrangement, within 15 miles. We do not do routine visits at home.
Still unsure? Ask a person.
Hollis answers the phone until 9 on weeknights.
