WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS / AT THE STUDIO

Come and make something.

Evenings with clay and a glass of wine, mornings at the wheel, and the days the kiln opens. Small groups, and nobody needs to have done it before.

What’s on.

Inside the shop: tagged pots on oak shelves, a walnut bench and a trestle table, the door open to the harbor

Wine and cheese at the bench

Saturday, Oct 10 / 5:00 to 7:30 pm

North Fork wine, cheese from the farm stand up the road, and both of us at work. The wheel is going, there’s a table on the bench half built, and you’re welcome to ask about any of it. Bring someone.

  • Free. Tell us you’re coming so we buy enough cheese.
  • Everything on the shelves is for sale that night.

Sculpt and sip

Thursday, Oct 15 / 6:30 to 8:30 pm

No wheel and no experience needed. We start with a ball of clay and show you how to pinch, coil and smooth it into a cup or a small bowl. You pick a glaze before you leave. We fire it, and it’s ready to collect or ship in four weeks.

  • Includes clay, glaze, both firings and two glasses of wine or cider.
  • You make one piece. Ages 21 and over.
  • Wear something you don’t mind getting clay on.

First time at the wheel

Saturday, Oct 24 / 10:00 am to 12:30 pm

A morning at the wheel for people who have never tried. We center the clay with you, pull up a wall together, and by noon you’ve thrown a cylinder that we turn into a mug. We trim it, add the handle, glaze it in the color you choose and fire it.

  • Includes clay, glaze and both firings.
  • Your mug is ready in five weeks.
  • Short nails help. Aprons are here.

Kiln days: Firing No. 15

Monday, Nov 2 to Wednesday, Nov 4 / Drop by after 2:00 pm

Firing No. 15 goes into the kiln on Monday and comes up to temperature overnight. Stop by the yard on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon and one of us will show you the flame, the cones bending, and what’s on the shelves inside.

  • Free, no booking. The yard gate is open.
  • It’s warm by the kiln. Children are welcome with a grown-up.

Sculpt and sip: glaze night

Thursday, Nov 12 / 6:30 to 8:30 pm

We throw and bisque the pots ahead of time. You choose one, then brush, dip and wax it with our six glazes while we explain what each one does in the kiln. Good for a group, and good if you’d rather decorate than build.

  • Includes the pot, glaze, the firing and two glasses of wine or cider.
  • Ready to collect or ship in three weeks. Ages 21 and over.

  • Free. Come early if there’s a piece you want.
  • The same pieces go on sale online at 10:00 Eastern.

Seconds table and mulled cider

Saturday, Dec 5 / 11:00 am to 5:00 pm

Once a year we put out every piece with a small flaw we’ve been holding back: a pinhole in the glaze, a rim that isn’t quite round. They work as well as any other and cost 30% less. Cider on the stove, wrapping at the counter.

  • Free, no booking. In the shop only.
  • Gift wrapping in linen and twine, $6 a piece.

Bring your board: an oiling clinic

Saturday, Dec 12 / 10:00 to 11:30 am

The joiner shows you how to clean, sand and oil wood so it lasts: what to use, how much, and how to fix a water ring. Bring one piece of your own, ours or anyone’s. You go home with a tin of the oil we use on our walnut.

  • Includes a 100 ml tin of hard oil and a cloth.
  • One piece each, small enough to carry.

BRING YOUR OWN GROUP

The studio, for an evening.

Sculpt and sip for eight to twelve people: a birthday, a team, the night before a wedding. Any Wednesday evening, with wine, cider and a cheese board from the farm stand up the road. $62 a person, and everyone’s piece is fired and ready in four weeks.

GOOD TO KNOW

Before you book.

Do I need to have done this before?

No. Every workshop starts from nothing, and there are never more than twelve people in the room.

When do I get what I made?

Clay has to dry and be fired twice, so your piece is ready three to five weeks later. Collect it from the shop, or we post it for $14.

What if I can’t make it?

Tell us three days ahead and we move you to another date or refund you. After that, send a friend in your place.

Can children come?

Kiln days and open evenings are for everyone. Sculpt and sip is 21 and over because of the wine. Ask us about a family morning.
