TWENTY QUESTIONS
Before you ask the bench.

Still stuck? Write to the studio. We answer within two days.
Firings and waitlists.
What is a firing?
One load of the gas kiln: about a day up to cone 10 and a day down. Everything in it is numbered on the foot, from 14/01 to 14/29 this time. When the last piece sells, the firing closes.
When does the next one open?
Firing No. 15 opens Saturday, Nov 14 at 10:00 Eastern. Since 2025 they’ve come about every eight weeks.
How does the waitlist work?
Leave an email. You get one message, on the Friday before the next firing opens, with a link that works a day early. Your number is a count of people ahead of you, not a reservation.
What is a second?
A piece with a flaw we can name: a pinhole, a glaze crawl at the foot, a warp under 2 mm. It works as well as a first. It costs 30% less, and the flaw is written on the tag.
Made to order.
Why a 50% deposit?
We buy and cut the boards for your piece in the first week. The deposit pays for the wood and the first half of the hours. The balance is charged when the piece is crated, before it leaves.
Can I cancel?
Within 7 days of ordering, yes, with the whole deposit back. After we cut your boards, the deposit stays with the piece.
Can you change the size?
Lengths move in 10 cm steps at no charge, up to 20 cm either way. Beyond that we draw it first and send a price.
Can I see my boards?
Yes. We photograph them with chalk marks in the first week and email them. If you want different figure, say so before we cut.
Shipping and freight.
How do ceramics ship?
Double-boxed in paper honeycomb, by ground parcel, within 5 business days. $14 for the first piece in the Northeast, $4 for each one after. Free over $250.
How does freight work?
Two people carry it in, unwrap it, and take the crate away. On Long Island and in the five boroughs that’s us, in our van, for $150. Elsewhere in NY, NJ, CT, PA, MA and RI a white-glove carrier brings it for $380. Farther than that, we quote.
Do you ship outside the contiguous US?
Not from this shop. Write to us and we’ll price it by hand.
Can I collect?
Yes, from the studio in Greenport, Thursday to Sunday. Choose Collect at checkout. We text when it’s ready.
Returns and damage.
What can I return?
Ceramics: within 14 days of delivery, unused, in the original box. We refund the piece; return postage is yours. Ready-made furniture: 14 days, return freight yours. Made-to-order furniture can’t be returned, but anything we built wrong, we fix.
It arrived broken.
Photograph the box and the piece and email us within 48 hours. We send a replacement from the next firing or refund it, your choice. Keep the pieces; some people make mosaics.
Care.
Dishwasher?
Plates, bowls, mugs and cups: yes, on a normal cycle. Vessels, jars and anything with a raw rim: by hand.
Oven?
Plates and bowls to 450°F, starting in a cold oven. Never from the fridge into a hot oven.
How often do I oil walnut?
Once a year, or when water stops beading. White oak with a soap finish gets re-soaped every few months instead.
Visiting, trade, commissions.
Can I see the kiln?
When it’s cool, yes. On a release Saturday the shop opens at 10:00 and the kiln door stays open until noon.
Do you have trade pricing?
15% off ceramics and 10% off furniture for designers, architects and shops. Apply on the trade page; we answer in two business days.
Do you take commissions?
Furniture, yes, within our designs and woods; we draw it first. Ceramics, no: they come in firings.
