A WALK THROUGH

Shop at the front, workshop at the back.

Nothing is roped off. Come in through the shop, walk out to the yard, and ask whoever has clay or sawdust on them.

  1. Inside the shop: tagged pots on oak shelves, a walnut bench and a trestle table, the door open to the harbor

    01 The shop

The front of the building. Everything on the oak shelves is for sale and has its price on a tag. The furniture is there to be sat on.

  2. Hands pulling up the wall of a stoneware cylinder on the wheel

    02 The wheel

Behind the counter. Most days someone is throwing, and a ball of clay becomes a cup in about three minutes. Stand as close as you like.

  3. The kiln opened after a firing, pots still on the shelves

    03 The kiln

In its own shed in the yard. It fires about every eight weeks. When it’s cool the door is off and you can look in; when it’s firing you can watch the flame.

  4. A joiner driving an oak peg through a trestle joint

    04 The bench

The back room, where the furniture is built one or two pieces at a time. The walnut for the next ones is stacked in the yard under the crane.
