Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what people ask before they call. If yours is not here, call us or use the chat.

Service Calls

Do you really answer the phone at 2 a.m.?

Yes. A dispatcher answers 24 hours a day and pages the on-call technician.

Why a two-hour window?

Because nobody should wait at home all day. We give you two hours and text you when the technician is 30 minutes away.

What does a service call cost?

There is a diagnostic fee to come out and find the problem, and it is waived for maintenance plan members. Repairs are priced from a flat-rate book, and you see the price before we start.

How do I pay?

After the work is done, by card or check. There is no deposit to book a repair.

Do I need to be home?

Someone 18 or older should be home for the first visit. For outdoor tune-ups we can work with a gate code.

Heating

My burner stopped. Should I press the reset button?

Once. If it starts and then stops again, leave it off and call us. Pressing it again and again can flood the chamber with oil.

How fast can you get here?

For a no-heat call in winter we aim to have a technician at your door the same day, and usually within a few hours. A dispatcher answers the phone 24 hours a day.

Do you work on all brands?

Yes. Our technicians service all major makes of boilers, furnaces and heat pumps, including systems we did not install.

Should I repair or replace?

As a rule of thumb, if the system is more than 15 years old and the repair costs more than a third of a new one, replacement is worth pricing. We will give you both numbers and let you decide.

Cooling

My AC is running but not cooling. What should I check?

Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and set below the room temperature, then check the filter. A filter you cannot see light through will freeze the coil. If you see ice on the pipes, switch to Fan only for two hours and call us.

How often should an air conditioner be serviced?

Once a year, in spring. A tune-up takes about an hour and is included in our maintenance plans.

How long does an air conditioner last?

Most central systems last 12 to 18 years with regular maintenance. If yours is in that range and needs a major repair, we will price both the repair and a replacement.

Central air or ductless?

If the house already has good ductwork, central air is usually the better value. With no ducts, or for a few rooms that never feel right, ductless is simpler and avoids opening ceilings.

Heat Pumps

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in January?

Yes, when it is sized for the house. Cold-climate models are rated for 5°F and below. We size from a room-by-room measurement, and if your boiler is still sound you can keep it as a backup for the coldest nights.

Will my electric bill go up?

Yes, and your oil or gas bill goes down or away. Coming off oil, propane or electric baseboard, most homes come out ahead. Coming off natural gas the savings are smaller, and most people switch for the cooling and comfort.

How long does a conversion take?

Six to eight weeks from the first visit to the final inspection for most houses. Most of that is permits and equipment on order. A crew is in your home for four or five of those days.

What happens to my oil tank?

We pump out the remaining oil, cut up and remove the tank, take the fill pipe off the outside wall and patch the siding. The leftover oil is credited on your invoice.

Do I need a new electrical panel?

Sometimes. We look at your panel during the home visit and put any electrical work on the written estimate, so there are no surprises.

Maintenance Plans

When do you schedule the visits?

We call or text you in early fall for heating and in spring for cooling, and you pick a two-hour window. You do not have to remember.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. Any plan can be paid monthly at no extra cost.

Do you cover systems you did not install?

Yes. We do a first visit to make sure the system is in serviceable condition, and after that it is covered like any other.

Can I cancel?

Any time. If you have not had a visit that year, we refund the unused months.

Estimates & Payment

Are estimates really free?

Yes. For a new system we come to the house, measure it, and send a written estimate. There is nothing to sign at the visit.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, for new systems, through a lender we have worked with for years. We go over the options with your estimate.

What about rebates?

Many utilities and state programs offer rebates on heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment. We tell you which ones apply and file the paperwork for you.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We carry the licenses our work requires and full liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and we are glad to send proof.
